20/20

glasses BW

Yesterday I took my mother-in-law to the eye doctor for a check up. Her eyesight is hideous. We spent the day running errands and enjoyed a Basque lunch. She enjoyed a glass of wine. And another. And another. And another.

At the end of the day we both agreed that even though her eyesight is hideous our hindsight is, in fact, 20/20.

Funny thing. My mom went through a big change last year - she had some medical crises, which led to her uprooting herself, selling her home, and moving a thousand miles away from a place she'd lived for some 20 years.

Before her crisis, mom used to enjoy her daily martini around 4 pm, when she'd watch the stock market report. But she stopped them when she got ill, and even when she'd made a relatively successful transition to her new assisted living facility, she stopped her daily cocktail habit.

I know that it's probably not a good idea to encourage an 84 year old lady to drink too much.

But you know what? I was talking to my brother recently, and he says that now his weekly visits with mom include what she calls "a wee dram." - a tiny liquour glass of Drambuie (of all things - yech to me)

But I think this means she is starting to get adjusted. I think it's a good sign.
