Here’s a little math to consider:

Sarah Palin : Jared Laughner

just as

Beatles : Charles Manson

To make the leap that Sarah Palin is responsible for what Jared Laughner allegedly did is preposterous and only coming from those that can’t stand Palin to begin with. To say that her election map with cross hairs ignited “wacko” Laughner’s actions is also preposterous. The map is an area map. The political representatives were not the direct target – the districts were.

Oh, I don’t have to bother to explain the absurdity of that argument here. Anyone visiting here is like minded (typically).

The crime Laughner is accused of is not right, left, Republican, Democrat, Tea Party, or even Toga Party. If he is found guilty of this crime, I’m certain we can all agree that swift justice is necessary.

Let’s stay tuned and learn what facts are revealed as the investigation continues and hope for the best for those suffering.

There will certainly be put downs from threatened people – mostly other women; but so what. I’ll be interested to read rebuttals; but mostly I’ll be interested to learn how many more think like me.

Nine years later I’m pleased to note that I’m free to hang my flags, free to speak, free to listen to, watch, and read what I like. Pretty much the only thing I have to endure are rude comments trying to belittle my mindset and those like me. Fine.

It works both ways; but I refrain from the demeaning comments to those opposing me. Rather, I am interested to try to understand that thinking that is different than mine. Sometimes I understand. ~~Sometimes~~ Most times I’m exasperated and really can’t bother. Arguing is not my bag unless I can do it in a few words. If not, I prefer to be out in the garden – alone with my thoughts. That’s pretty much why I haven’t posted anything here for quite some time.

I take solace in knowing that my ideas and values are not so outrageous. There are many, many more that join me. This is validating. This is encouraging. I know that being in a herd isn’t always a good thing. But right now I believe many of us feel so strongly about some issues that we are not being silent as usual.

I’m pleased to note that I’m free to hang my flags and all the other benefits enjoyed in America.

Order in the Court

The legal saga continues.

The disagreement is moving to small claims court. Someone must have notified Judge Judy. Her program contacted the plaintiff (defendant in the harassment junk posted earlier) to offer a spot on the program. Outrageous! They pay expenses (travel/hotel) to come to Hollywood for taping of the program. This was no big shakes considering that both parties live in the area. The big selling point was that the Judge Judy Show would also pay for anything awarded to the plaintiff. That’s right. The defendant would not have to pay a thing. Zero. On top of that, each player would be paid $400. That’s a nice piece of pocket change.

The plaintiff accepted. The defendant continued to be a big, fat, stinky turd and declined. She is gambling that a judge in court will rule in her favor. This seems unlikely since there are legal documents backing up the claim. When the judge rules in favor of the plaintiff, the defendant will be responsible for the entire award. The good people at the Judge Judy Show will not pick up the tab.

The defendant may get another chance. Judge Pirro may have access to the same case list as the Judge Judy Show. If they make an offer, take it. It’s not often that you get a 2nd chance.

It’s a shame that this case couldn’t be heard in front of Sammy Davis Jr.

Help Yourself

Last week I was in Los Angeles (please pronounce as the late Mayor Sam Yorty said: Los Angles). I was there to assist a citizen with some legal matters. The disagreement had escalated to a courtroom. That’s fine. The legal system, for the most part, is there to resolve such issues. The plaintiff had not notified the defendant properly of the court date. The plaintiff did not expect the defendant to appear. The plaintiff filled her pants upon the sight of the defendant in the hallway waiting to answer the plaintiff’s complaint.

It was wonderful to experience the legal system at work. The plaintiff’s complaint was voided via an agreement with a mediator. It wasn’t as satisfying as going before a judge and having the decision ruled in your favor. It wasn’t as satisfying as hearing the theme song to Perry Mason as you walk out of the courtroom feeling like Della Street (That’s me in the center of the picture below. Not really.). It was satisfying just the same to come away exposing the plaintiff as an unprepared little twit that would do well to meet her legal obligations with the responsibility of a grown up adult.

My citizen companion was enthusiastic to play a game of Let’s Cast the Courtroom. This helped pass the time as we waited 1/2 hour for the judge to arrive. Note to Judge: punctuality is appreciated on both sides of the bench. While I was using Barbara Hale as Della Street to play my role, Sam Waterston playing Law & Order’s Jack McCoy is how the defendant wanted to be cast. Done. The remainder of the casting will be revealed via a comedy sketch someday.

Now the judge ordered the feuding plaintiff and defendant to go to mediation and see if they could work things out even though both, when asked, refused mediation. This was an entertaining time for me as if I has slipped down the rabbit hole. The mediator directed me to wait on a concrete bench in the courthouse lobby while the others went to discuss their differences. This was boring. I wandered into the Self Help Center. I had hopes of delving into all sorts of legal reading material. Sadly, there was only a wire rack with a few fliers in Spanish. There was one piece of paper in English. I sat down to learn more. After that stale piece of literature was consumed, I noticed that I was sitting at a computer for the public. Since some of the court staff members were surprised that the defendant even knew about the court hearing, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see how long it would take for me to look up the court schedule using a public computer. My experiment was interrupted.

“Are you here for the Self Help Center?” I was asked by the young clerk behind the counter located further into the room.

“No. I’m waiting for someone in mediation,” I responded and continued scrolling through the case timeline.

“You can’t be in here unless you’re using the Self Help Center. You have to sign in to use the computers.”

“Oh. I’m sorry. I didn’t see a sign telling me to sign in.” I stood up and moved to the counter.

“Are you here for the Self Help Center?” she asked again.

Looking to the two other occupants in the room for confirmation that I was spiraling down the rabbit hole I replied, “Yes. Yes I am here to help myself.” Certainly the Self Help Center was meant for people to help themselves regarding legal matters.

“Are you working on some forms?”

“No. I was simply looking at a court schedule; but I can help myself. Do I need to sign in?”

“Well, finish looking up the schedule then you have to leave. This is for self help. You can’t be here.”

My head must be fuzzy from my travel to LA and the short amount of sleep I had prior to the court appointment. Did she really ask me to leave the Self Help Center because I was helping myself? I needed a drink of water. I shut down that computer and searched for water. Out on the street are vendors similar to the little boy selling tomales in the crowd at the hanging in True Grit. I grabbed a couple of bottles and went back in.

My companion (aka Jack McCoy) said that she had requested that I be called in but the mediator refused. Okay, I’m getting wound up that the case was being forced to mediation, then I got kicked out the Self Help Center, now I find out I was banned from mediation. They would call the two of us in shortly. In the meantime, we relished the cool water and went into the Self Help Center to look at our files and wait.

Glory be. A different Self Help Clerk asks us if we were there to use the Self Help Center. ( I swear they both used the words Self Help Center close to a gajillion times.) I explained that we were waiting to reenter mediation and had materials to work on. No good.

“We’re here to help you at the Self Help Center.” REMARKABLE! “We’re here to help you with forms. Do you have forms you need help with?”

“No thank you. We can work on them by our selves.”

“You can’t stay here unless you’re using the Self Help Center.”

At this point, the clerk rises to her feet and holds her hand up pointing to the letters on the wall behind her showing us with the tone of a kindergarten teacher that this is the SELF HELP CENTER.

“I get it. We’re helping ourselves.” Please note that old Jack McCoy is silent during this entire exchange. Perhaps Jack was simply enjoying the trip we were on.

“What is the reason for your attitude?” the kindergarten clerk snapped.

That did it. I came unwound and proceeded to inform the clerk that her insanity was the reason for my attitude. I can’t remember the dialogue at this point. The mushrooms must have kicked in.

Jack and I retreated to the area just outside the doors of the Self Help Center. I proposed to take a headcount for all the citizens rushing in to use the Self Help Center. Not one person entered during this experiment. These clerks with jobs to serve the public must have had terrible experiences to make them the worst customer service representatives I’ve ever encountered. Ever – that includes England.

Upon my return trip to the courthouse next month, I would like to present to these young ladies a token to remember our shared experience together:

Fake President

No surprise that me and Rachel Maddow do not have the same opinions on so many things. Last night, I came to agree with her. The Fake President Obama speech I watched on her program must have been due to planet alignment or something. msnbc is not a channel I watch; but I stumbled upon her bit.

She needs to be hired to be the stand-in for President Obama for all future speeches. Her ability to present a speech that gets to the point, shows emotion, and presents leadership is so far beyond Obama’s that he would do well to at least hire her as a consultant (not that I want his ideas to move forward). She’s got the skills.

And today, she met with Obama along with Eugene Robinson of The Washington Post, columnist Gail Collins of the New York Times, Gerald F. Seib of the Wall Street Journal and a handful of White House staffers according to the Washington Post.

I would like to propose she present to the President the same idea to control illegal immigration---plug the hole.

Now for your consideration…

Afterthought- Since I live in an oil rich area and the economy here is driven by the success of that privately run enterprise that is overseen by the government, I’m not in a big hurry to stop the use of hydrocarbons and switch to unicorns. However, locally, Chevron has installed a solar field in a portion of the Kern River Oilfield. If Kern County and the southwest moved to solar power we just might be able to rule the world (or maybe ride unicorns to work).

Oh yes, I voted. I’m one of the few. Thanks to the rest of you for staying home. My vote was made more powerful without having to deal with the business of cancelling your vote. The minority of the population that voted rules the majority that didn’t take the time to mark a ballot. Thank you.

Additionally, I have been called to jury duty. What book should I take? I’m considering True Grit since the movie is being re-made to more closely follow the book. Do you think the attorneys will look at me with eyes for dismissal if I carry in a copy of True Grit? Or will they look at with the eye(s) of Rooster Cogburn?

Memorial Day Comment Addressed

I expressed my thoughts on a Memorial Day post last week. Aunt Snow left a comment Saturday morning that I feel needs a response in a separate post. Aunt Snow’s comment is broken down and in blue. My response follows in bold. Ready? Here we go.

This bothers me too. I’m glad I’m not alone.

I'm not sure I understand who you're talking to when you use the pronoun "you" in this piece.

“You” is 1^st used in my post in reference to those that admire the terrorists of 9/11.

Who admires 9/11 terrorists? I am politically liberal and I don't know anyone who does.

I do not know these people that admire the acts of terrorists. I do however read opinions. The opinion that sparked my post was from a commenter replying to the plea from another blogger to list someone they admired that might be surprising. Here’s the comment:

“I live in NYC. I've lived here for over 20 years. Part of me admires part of the group that engineered 9/11. It was a brilliant plan, brilliantly executed and while it probably didn't do everything they wanted it to do it did change the course of the country for a long time, probably forever. I don't like them. I don't want them to have any more brilliant plans. But I admire that intelligence of the plan and near perfection of its execution.”

To be fair, that commenter was apprehensive to post this admiration. Nonetheless, I see nothing admirable with the 9/11 plan nor the terrorists involved. That commenter is not alone in their view. There are many others that hope much worse happens to America and Americans.

Who wants to take from you so that they can have more themselves?

The 1^st thing that comes to mind is my tax increase. It’s constant. There is never a tax reduction or a temporary tax. More is taken from me in the form of taxes to redistribute to those receiving welfare type services and to support bigger government that doles out those services. Certainly I see the need for social programs to help those through a time of need. That should be such a minimal number in our population. Living on welfare should not be a way of life. Helping people obtain the tools they need in order to support themselves is what I believe works best. This gives people a sense of pride. A sense of purpose. The 2^nd thing on my list is the financial burden of illegal aliens. Please note: I know the difference between immigrant and illegal alien. One brings something to the country in a legal fashion while another crowds and takes from this country. Those of us that give are really getting tired of those that don’t.

I am politically liberal, and I don't know anyone who does.

I don’t know that you can hang a label on me. Neither liberal nor conservative fits me. Perhaps practical or functional works somehow. I think I like the term “button-down” to best describe me.

Who "spews" (can we have a moratorium on that word, BTW?) shocking junk, and - while you're at it - please quote the junk you find so shocking.

I like the word spew. Spew spew spew spew spew. No limit or restrictions on words here. It’s funny. After reading your comment I was listening to “Wait…Wait Don’t Tell Me” on NPR and heard the word “spew” repeated 3 times during the “Who’s Carl This Time” segment.

Shocking junk can be read and heard from practically all forms of communication today. I provided a quote above from a commenter to a post on another blog. This little blog of mine doesn’t require me to site a ding dong thing; but I would like to list one recent bit of junk I found very shocking from the sweet lips of opinionist (word I just made up) Helen Thomas:

I am addressing anyone. Everyone. Kind of like art isn’t it? One individual may interpret this completely different from another.

I love talking with you about gardening, but you seem to be addressing a villain that doesn't really exist.

Dear Aunt Snow, I perceive you to be a kind and generous soul. If you could save the world you would. Your glasses are rose colored and I appreciate you for this. However, there are villains and they do exist. The world is a much different place than it was 40, 30, 20, 10 years ago.

Now, I’m not a writer. I studied rocks and I enjoy gardening. I would rather be out working in the garden right now; but I made the original post and need to address your comment. My hope is to communicate clearly with you without any negative tone attached to the typed words.

I live in Bakersfield, California. It’s a completely different place than where you live; but there are many, many more places similar to good old Bakersfield with many, many like minded citizens. Debate is not my thing either. Arguing is not something I cherish. My Memorial Day post is simply an outlet for me to express my thoughts. Some people find Americans arrogant. Arrogant is being confused with confidence. In our country’s short history sometimes the biggest weapon we had was confidence. We weren’t supposed to win so many confrontations because we were only Americans. Today, some Americans are apologetic for our confidence and our way of life. They are intent on redesigning our country to resemble a socialistic and sometimes communistic way of life. That’s the kind of life others are trying to escape with hopes of coming to America to live free.

Are these Americans insane! I believe so. These scary types disgust me with some of their shocking comments. Perhaps those comments are only meant to shock. Congratulations. I’m shocked when I read that you admire the terrorists of 9/11. You’re the same type that want to take more from me so you can have more yourself. I don’t like you. I don’t like your thinking. Strangely, I would welcome you into my garden for a discussion so I could guide you to see how wonderful our country is and encourage you to stop trying to destroy the USA. So many fight for your right to say the shocking junk you spew. So many have died so you can try to bring this great country down. Yet you insist you’re right.

Now who’s arrogant?

In keeping with the whole illegal immigration thing, I bring you the awesome Bick Benedict.

Now Arizona isn’t proposing to take on illegal immigration ala Sarge. Arizona is merely protecting its citizens---all of its citizens. I would liken Sarge to those siding with illegal immigration---forcing illegal junk on citizens. Big bullies.

Good Ol’ Bick is representing Arizona citizens---all of its citizens. He’s fighting for the protection of everyone. He’s fighting for the right.

The recent play by Arizona’s Corporation Commission threatening to restructure contracts providing electricity to Los Angeles due to the LA boycott of Arizona delights me. What great strategy. I’m almost certain the energy could be put to good use in neighboring Las Vegas. Has anyone in California bothered to read Section 834 of the California Penal Code? Geez – it looks like Arizona’s SB1070. The only difference is Arizona plans to finally enforce the law. California is just grabbing its ankles. Ouch.

I do hope the fight to enforce immigration laws is more successful than Good Ol’ Bick’s fight.

Side note: Rock Hudson – what a waste of man. Mmmmm. Mmmmm. Mmmmm.

Arizona Has Taken Off Those Rainbow Shades!

Arizona is realizing the wrath of two bankrupt (financially and morally) cities in bankrupt California along with other ne’er do wells. These modern day Gomorrahs view things so totally opposite from me that one day I may take a bite of the mushroom they are enjoying to see what it’s like.

Until then, I plan to throw financial support to businesses in Arizona. There are organic gardening supply companies, organic beef, pet supplies, and most anything else you might need. I can send support via the internet OR I could take a trip and see the desert before the heat takes hold OR I could encourage others to plan their meetings, seminars, conferences, and vacations in the desert southwest of Arizona.

I will not intentionally toss my dollars (as weak as they are) toward Los Angeles or San Francisco. No way. Stand firm Arizona for what you believe. There are many more of us supporting you. Saguaro Cactus Blossom – Carnegica Gigantea

Finally. Mel Brooks will be getting is star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What has taken so long?! He will receive his honor on Friday, April 23. I would love to be there; but hope the wonders of the internet will help recreate the moment. Anyone lucky enough to be there is just that---plain lucky.

When I create my dream luncheon, Mel Brooks is always on the guest list. I want to be surrounded with laughter, good food, and great memories.

Tea Party – Bakersfield, California, U. S. A.

Cowboy hats, liberty bell, and the American flag. This is Bakersfield, California, U. S. A. People gathered for the 2nd Tea Party to show support for disgust toward our government. They were trying to make a point. People gathered to express their opinions. There were speakers. There were singers. There was even prayer. GASP!

There were signs. Loads of signs.

I noticed this tall chap holding a 2 sided sign up above the crowd. He was well behaved and mostly silent. He stood on the outside fringe next to the fire truck along with a man holding a “Don’t Tread On Me” flag. I knew he wasn’t part of the party. I hate to even give him a mention; but he wasn’t a disruption as long as I was there.

Now, come on, Mr. Tea Party Crasher. If you’re trying to convince people that you’re a retard (Yes, I said retard. I use it all the time. So there.) with your misspelled words and improper punctuation, the least you could do is lose your engineer like handwriting.

I don’t know where he came from; but he did tell me that it didn’t take him too long to get to the party. I do hope he enjoyed his stay in Bakersfield, California, U. S. A. And I do hope he spent plenty of money during his visit.

Following the Tea Party, there was a street fair just a few blocks away. The street fairs are held once each month in April, May, and June. Then we take shelter.

Tea Party

I’m thinking of attending the next tea party (April 15, 2010) in Bakersfield. Not to make a statement - just to observe AND take some interesting photos. I’m thinking of attending; but I’m not sure. The side opposing the tea party may be interesting to observe. Are they really from Bakersfield? Are they there to just stir the pot? Will any politicians show up? If I go, I’ll be on the fringe looking in.

My favorite place is home. If I don’t have to go anywhere, I won’t go anywhere. I’m thinking of attending. Maybe I’ll buy a t-shirt.

Please. No stupid comments about tea bagging. That’s so Ho-Hum.

Road Trip Sonoma – Part III (eats)

We had a continental breakfast at the Ledson Hotel before we started out. It was wearing thin after touring the Pacific Air Museum; so we headed out to St. Helena to nosh at Tra Vigne. I’m more of an American diner type gal; but Farmer MacGregor is a complete foodie. This is the place he enjoys and it was really good. We started with the organic lettuce salad. Okay. Since this plate of greens was $9, I figure that the salad stuff from my garden is well worth $20/salad. The candied walnuts were my favorite part of this dish. Next, was the Seasonal Fritto Misto.

This dish consisted of prawns, artichoke, lemons, and calamari all fried up served with a creamy dipping sauce. Since I’m not a fan of mayonnaise (hate it), I had everything sans sauce. The very best was the thinly sliced lemons. Zowee. Following that was a rosemary pizzetta.

Roasted garlic with a chunk of cambozola cheese was served with this thin, thin crust. Farmer MacGregor simply smooshed out all the garlic and spread it on the slices. We each took whatever amount of the cheese we liked to spread on the pieces. Garlicy! Next?

The roasted butternut squash ravioli inspired me to search for butternut squash seeds. This dish had toasted sage and walnut brown butter served with the ravioli and parmesan. This was really, really good. Really, really good. Dessert anyone?

I had a Meyer lemon tart. This put the POW in powerful taste. The dish was great from the bottom of its crispy crust through to the tangy lemon filling up to the scant meringue topping. Too much meringue is just that – too much. This was just right. I couldn’t lick all the huckleberry sauce off the plate.

Bread pudding was next for the farmer. Candied orange rinds and raisins joined the pantone bread to make the pudding. This was topped with Frangelico ice cream. The farmer loves his Frangelico. The place was fairly empty so we had excellent service from a very nice staff. We’ve been there when it’s busy and the service is just as great. If you enjoy food and flavors, Tra Vigne is really a nice experience when visiting St. Helena.Farmer MacGregor spoke to the chef/owner to extend his compliments and chat about all things food. Here’s what the rest of the place looks like.

At the end of this patio is the smoke house. The waiter recommended the short ribs and said they could be eaten with a spoon because of their tenderness. View from the roadside through to the patio and back to the restaurant. The Tra Vigne dude makes a great scarecrow. I want one for my garden. We drove passed the Tra Vigne Pizzeria on our way back to the Ledson Hotel in Sonoma and I noticed a huge tomato. It looks just like the one on top of Frugatti’s in Bakersfield.

The plans for dining at Della Santina’s in Sonoma would have to be cancelled. There was no room to stuff more food. Too bad. The place came highly recommended. We did see it though from across the street in the bookstore. The bookstore sells eggs but does not sell newspapers. We’ll keep Della Santina’s on the list for our next visit.

Sonoma was a nice place to get away for a few days before returning to Spring chores.

Road Trip Sonoma – Part II

We gave our sneakers a rest, left Sonoma, and headed up to Santa Rosa to visit the Pacific Coast Air Museum. The museum is located at the Charles M. Schulz Airport. Cool. As we entered Santa Rosa, I noticed the walking paths are lined with wisteria. Really. Does everything grow beautifully here? Farmer MacGregor is a huge fan of military aviation – especially WWII. Oh yeah. He can fly the crap out of an Medal of Honor Airborne. It seems like a place old boys love to hang out. Farmer MacGregor enjoyed guiding our tour. I enjoyed this kind of stuff…

Road Trip Sonoma!

Farmer MacGregor and I got Old Bessie out and took a ride to spend a few days in Sonoma recently. Getting ready for a trip is a huge reason why I don’t like to go anywhere. The preparation for this trip was especially tedious because the homestead was being fumigated while we traveled. Everything came together the Monday morning we were to leave. All the items that needed to be removed from the house were removed. The animals had been taking to be boarded. Valuables were secured. Everything had been heavily irrigated. We were set. The weather was beautiful and clear as we headed north for a few days of scenery change. The wild mustard was thriving along the road on the edge of almond orchards. I’m not familiar when pistachios bud; so I couldn’t tell if the pistachio orchards were being let go fallow or if they hadn’t broken yet. The pistachios are the grey matter in the center of the photograph below.The central valley of California is in the middle of a political battle for water. There has always been a battle for the power of water here and I suspect that there always will be. Farmers are making their opinions known with the sad realization that their elected officials will continue to ignore their demands/needs (ala health care). Please understand that the green grass is simply a result of the recent rains. It too will join the dead trees. I’m very familiar with the politics involved in this situation and I’m very aware of the amount of money/power at stake. The fallowed fields means either the farmers are fallowing their fields to make a point or they are fallowing their fields because they cannot afford the water or there simply is no water to be delivered. Seeing the dead patches along I-5 really punctuated the dire situation. Harris Ranch is a nice oasis in Coalinga to stretch, refresh, and have a bite to eat. Farmer MacGregor had pot roast going and ham & eggs on the return trip. I had a chicken wrap northbound and a hamburger coming home. It’s a recommended stop for travelers driving or flying (There’s an airstrip.) up or down California. The place was developed by cotton farmers who worked hard and succeeded parlaying their success into cattle and race horses. Old Bessie did her part in insect eradication. In just a few short hours she went form freshly cleaned, polished, and waxed to a fly swatter stand in. We knew we were in the northern half of the state by the rolling green hills. Those hills are home to wind mills. The Tehachapi Mountains to the south have loads of windmills (maybe more and bigger too!) As we traveled north, the clouds darkened and Old Bessie was rinsed clean. Rain is always a welcome event. There was a bit of a navigational snag at this point though. Just know the new fangled GPS gizmo demanded we take one route while the map showed something better. The gizmo was shut off. The map was ripped to shreds; and we made it just the same. Sonoma is a quaint, very quiet town. The town square – Sonoma Plaza - reminded me of Back to the Future. We took a right turn here to get to where we would be staying a couple of nights. Just around the corner is the Ledson Hotel. We had to drive through the tunnel to get to parking in the rear. Ours is the center room there. It’s called Winslow’s Room. Who Winslow is, I don’t know; but this is what the room looks like. This is the view from the balcony. Take special note: the sidewalks are unrolled in this photo. They do roll up the sidewalks very, very early in Sonoma. The balcony is no doubt a great place to sit and enjoy the scenery. On Tuesday nights there is a Farmers’ Market in the square – Sonoma Plaza; but those don’t start until April. Dang. See the glass awning overhanging the sidewalk? Kinda cool. Here’s a closer look at those blooming trees (Anyone know what they are? Cherries?).

Farmer MacGregor dined at La Salette Monday night. I didn’t see anything on the menu that I cared to try; so I was just a companion. I gave him 5 stars to rate the place and he did. He awarded La Salette 1 star. Whoops. Boy, I’m glad I didn’t take a plate. We made our way down to Murphy’s Irish Pub to see if they had something I could enjoy. They did. I had some sausage rolls – which I cannot recommend. They were sliced bangers with jalepeno cheese in puff pastry. I know. I know. But I thought I would try it. If any DBE members are reading this DO NOT try that recipe. Stick with what you know gals. They were way too greasy. Nevertheless, it was a fun place and Farmer MacGregor enjoyed some liquid warmth. “It’s hot in here!” We enjoyed plenty within walking distance. The Basque Cafe full of fresh baked goods but no XXXXL t-shirts.

The sight of the Bear Flag Revolt. Who knew?! The Mission San Francisco Solano. There was a tour of 4th graders on a field trip to the mission as we were taking our self-guided tour. That brought back fond memories of being a chaperone to Mission San Miguel near Paso Robles.General Vallejo’s barracks. Farmer MacGregor used for scale.

One gigantic eucalyptus tree. Farmer MacGregor used for scale. The Sebastiani Theatre was showing Easter Parade; but we were at La Salette and missed the 7pm showing. There are shops and restaurants lining the plaza. Why isn’t William Sonoma in Sonoma?

PG&E and Valley Heat

The San Joaquin Valley is a hot, dry place. No doubt. There are dust storms, allergies, and Valley Fever to weed out the weak. Another test is this. Can you afford your electricity bill? Well, can ya?

It seems some valley folks are bending the ear of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. – PG&E to convince them that valley rate payers are tired of subsidizing electricity for city slickers. The Kern County Taxpayers Association is really helping us out by fighting the fight. The extra special part about the whole thing is that it’s pissing people off in the Bay Area and along the coast.

Oh yeah. We like that.

Read the article in the San Francisco Chronicle. Make sure to read the comments. Ain’t it funny how those that had their rates subsidized by us don’t want to subsidize our rates? There’s another article in the Bakersfield Californian too.

Oh, it will be a fun fight to watch. I hope we finally win one.

…Sacramento, CA. State Senator Roy Ashburn was arrested recently for DUI while driving a State vehicle with a passenger in the car. Oh, he’s been a worm for years. He’s been a worm since he was my County Supervisor. WORM!

I guess that’s what it takes to be a politician.

I’ll stick with the real deal. They at least do the job they are hired to do and cost me a lot less money and freedom. WORMS!

Local Food

If you could recommend 3 eateries that represented where you live what would they be?

This is tough for me in Bakersfield. There are a bunch for me to pick from; but I need to narrow the field to 3 (with absolutely no chains). Here’s my recommendations:

1. Wool Growers – Basque food. Loads of food. Loads of socializing. Loads of atmosphere. The Basque came to Kern County to raise sheep. Many Basque hotels and restaurants thrived near the train station to cater to immigrants arriving in Bakersfield. Some establishments are still here with a rich history and loyal clientele.

2. Dewar’s – Ice cream and candy shop. This place has been around for awhile (1909). All the locals know about chews, Black & Whites, and George’s Specials.

3. Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace – Entertainment and food. I picked the Crystal Palace because so many people think of Buck Owens when they think of Bakersfield. The entertainment is great the food is alright. However, I know many enjoy the gigantic chicken fried steaks.

Other finalists include: Mexicalli, Zingo’s, Milt’s, Bill Lee’s Bamboo Chopsticks, Fish Lips, the Highland Cafe, Westchester Bowl, 24th Street Cafe.

When you’re passing through Bakersfield on your way to somewhere else, stop in and spend some money. We appreciate your visit.

Ralph and the Giant Tomato

(Absolutely nothing like James and the Giant Peach.)

Since I planted a butt load of tomatoes, I needed to visit the giant tomato for a photo outing. Ralph has a giant tomato. Really. He does. Ralph is Italian. Really. He’s from Italy and he has a giant tomato. Ralph also has a restaurant in Bakersfield called Frugatti’s. He and his wonderful family have a great restaurant and catering service. The giant tomato is the centerpiece to the entrance of his Italian eatery.We went to have a wonderful meal; but I wanted to take some pictures of Ralph’s giant tomato before the sun went down and some more photos after the lights came on. We always have a wonderful meal whenever we go to Frugatti’s. Always. The food is great and the place always seems to be buzzing with happy customers. I prefer to eat at a place that has the clatter of dishes and chatter of people enjoying themselves. The music is always great too – Rat Pack, Clooney, Prima, Damone, etc. Friday and Saturday nights are extra special though. Bob Iorio is at Frugatti’s. Bob plays the accordion and Bob rocks! Thankfully, I paced myself on this night. I had room for triple chocolate cheesecake. Mama Mia! They make a Reese’s peanut butter cup cheesecake too. Dieters beware.Take a look at the menu. There are tomatoes everywhere. Tomatoes mark menu items that are Frugatti’s favorites. Tomatoes are on the logo. And there are most definitely tomatoes in the dishes to choose from.

Maybe you’ll be inspired to visit Bakersfield before the heat arrives. Even if you wait until the summer, Ralph keeps it nice and cool at Frugatti’s.Thanks for keeping it cool, Ralph. (Grazie per tenerlo fresco, Raffaele. Per inciso, hai qualche foto di Bob?).

Here’s a gardening challenge for those that follow Maybelline’s Garden: Ralph is planning on building an arbor to follow the arch of Frugatti’s doorway. He would like some kind of vine to grow on the ironwork. The area is shaded for most of the day; but, POW! It really gets hit at sundown. If you have a suggestion for a durable vine that would thrive in zone 9, forward your suggestions to me. Thanks.

I’ve Been Used

Hot Mess only comes around sporadically now. That’s okay. This evening on my walk around the neighborhood, I spotted Hot Mess. He was cruising up the street. I tailed him to see where he was hanging out. He scored. He scored big time. He’s hanging out at the cat lady’s house up the street. Oh, there’s a couple of houses in the neighborhood that could be a cat house. This one is at least occupied by a clean animal lover. Hot Mess will blend in with all the other cats that hang out under the year round holiday lights on the front porch.

Hot Mess returned this morning and again this evening. He now has two doses of antibiotics in him. He has a young “meow” and let’s me get a bit closer; but not too close. What tore him up?

As Hot Mess was finishing up dinner, I noticed a familiar sound and sight that might explain his wounds.

An old hooty owl was watching every move Hot Mess was making. There’s a pair of them in the neighborhood. They hoot back and forth to each other. It gives me goose bumps when they fly low overhead.

There are many stray cats in our neighborhood. There have always been strays; but it seems to really be noticeable now. There is one particular cat stands out. He is all tore up with scabs and soars all about his head and face. His tail is bent and must have been lopped off at some point. It’s not bobbed. It’s more like a 3/4 tail.

This morning he was out front; but wanted nothing to do with me. This afternoon, he returned while I was working in the flower beds. I put out a can of food for him to try to earn his trust. He was more hungry than cautious. If he comes around again (and I believe he will), I try putting some antibiotics in the food.

He’s a hot mess. So he is named Hot Mess.

Road Trip Part II – Huntington Library

After a day at the races, we moved on to visit the Huntington Library. There’s a mansion that houses fine art. And I mean fine art. Not the kind of art where someone gathers garbage together and fancies themselves an artist. They continue the charade by convincing others that the garbage is art – similar to the the naked emperor I suppose. This stuff was fine and there was loads of it. The docents were interesting to listen and learn from. I took photos inside; but with the “no flash” restriction the photos are less than remarkable. All the beauty isn’t indoors. There are acres of botanical beauty to explore.

This is the biggest hydrangea I’ve ever seen. Isn’t that crazy? Remarkable.This is impressive. What must the dog that uses this look like?Visiting the green house was more than we could bear. The heat and humidity was nothing we wanted to experience in February. Our summer is coming soon enough. Out we went. You need to make sure to allow plenty of time (all day) to explore. Make sure to wear sneakers if you go. You can thank me later. See what I mean?Prepare to walk and walk and walk and walk….Here’s what the grounds looked like in 1924 (courtesy LA Public Library). And here’s what the place looks like today. Sheesh! Take some sneakers.

The contents of the library itself is pretty remarkable. Interestingly, a book I coveted at Hearst Castle was on display in the Huntington – Land of Little Rain by Mary Austin (1903). The debate between Lincoln and Douglas with surveying books from George Washington were on display. There were loads and loads of cases containing many interesting works.

It cost $20 to enter and explore. Admission to The Huntington is free to all visitors on the first Thursday of every month with advanced tickets. Hours on Free Day are 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Reserve enough time and wear sneakers.

These sneakers are not recommended for comfortable touring.

Road Trip Part I – Santa Anita

It was time to get out of the garden and do something fun. Farmer M and I decided the garden could last one day without us toiling. And it did. On Saturday, we went on a road trip to Pasadena. I’ve never been to a horse race an wanted to go to Santa Anita to experience the atmosphere and admire the horses. It was an easy driver up the Grapevine and over the ridge. There was only skiffs of snow up in the higher elevations and traffic remained smooth all the way to Pasadena. Finding the track was a snap and so was parking. While standing back at the ticket booth to determine what we needed to purchase, a gentleman came up to us and gave us tickets and a few words of advice and direction. Very nice. I bought a program and we went to explore the facility and admire the horses.

The track opened on Christmas Day 1934. There’s a ton of art deco. Up high on some buildings are these metal cutouts of horse racing. Pretty cool, huh? As the horses came out to be paraded in the paddock prior to their race, I noticed they had their tongues wrapped with tape or plastic wrap. Most were annoyed. I had never seen that before. We were told this was done to prevent the horse from swallowing its tongue. I had never heard of such a thing.Farmer M decided that he liked the looks of #4; so this was the horse we watched. Dud. We went back to take a look at the horses for the next race. I thought #6, Alabama Boy, would be the one that I would watch. He was dead last! We had some expensive lunch. Corn beef sandwich, turkey sandwich, potato chips, bottle of soda, and a bottle of beer totaled more than $30. Preposterous. Not only that, but the beer was in a plastic bottle.

Now I wanted to learn about betting on the horses. My mother requested that I pick the 3rd horse in the race and bet the minimum amount to win. Gato Go Win was that horse that I invested $2 on. He won! Yahoo Mountain Dew. I went to collect my winnings of $16.80. Since the sight of the thoroughbreds was disturbing to Mr. M, we said farewell to Santa Anita Racetrack and moved on to the Huntington Library.

There are those that consider themselves the “enlightened” ones. They consider themselves intelligent above “common” folk. They are tolerant of others…as long as the others agree with everything they believe even if it’s wrong. Anyone that doesn’t agree with these enlightened, intellectual, tolerant souls are wished dead rather than debated or ignored. If that’s tolerance, you can keep it.

An authoress contributing to another blog suggested that a preferable recent headline would have been Doctors Say Rush Limbaugh Is On His Deathbed rather than Doctors Find Nothing Wrong With Rush Limbaugh's Heart when reporting about his recent hospitalization due to chest pains. Commentors to that post rallied the suggestion and carried the point further. (That blog is not linked here. I don’t want to provide free advertisement since I’m a capitalist and wouldn’t want that blog that caters to the “tolerant” to be subjected to capitalism. It’s the least I can do.)

It seems to me that those tolerant souls have hearts as empty as a tin man. Very hypocritical. These types spout love for their fellow man. Sure. Right. I suppose everyone is a hypocrite; but not everyone wishes ill to those they oppose. These commentors are mean.

To these intolerantly tolerant people I submit they should take on the chant Oil Can just like the tin man and pray the wizard grants them a heart.

I’ve just had all of my annual check ups in spite of the U.S Preventative Services Task Force new recommendations. Where’s the outrage from women? Maybe it’s out there & I’m missing it. It seems there is more outrage that Sarah Palin is on a book tour than the reduction in health awareness for women.

Isn’t it interesting that the reductions came in a double whammy to women’s health care rather than to the prescriptions for men to get that little blue pill?

One way or another, it seems women are getting the shaft.

Saturday Morning Walk

We took the dog for a walk out around Lake Ming this morning. As we were finishing our walk, I spotted something very unusual in the brush. Check it out. Deer! There were 2. I was so surprised that I was lucky to even snap this. Wish I would have had my long lens.

There was a mama and baby. This is the baby. They were on the south side of the Kern River and took off heading toward the canyon.

I’ve never seen deer this low before. Very cool.

My weakness is popcorn (& fruit chewy gummy candy, bread, ice cream, butter, Ruffles, salsa, etc.). From those comments she selected a couple and awarded them a food processer. I didn’t win. No big deal. I have a new food processer. Here’s the interesting part.

One of her readers is mad about statistics and provided the results of the poll. This was interesting; but I like to see my statistics rather than read them. I took the information and made a quick graph. Now I feel like playing Trivial Pursuit.

Yesterday I took my mother-in-law to the eye doctor for a check up. Her eyesight is hideous. We spent the day running errands and enjoyed a Basque lunch. She enjoyed a glass of wine. And another. And another. And another.

At the end of the day we both agreed that even though her eyesight is hideous our hindsight is, in fact, 20/20.

Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was released from prison in Scotland for compassionate reasons. He is terminal with prostate cancer.

What?! These are not the Scots I know. The Scots I know would not release a convicted terrorist that blew up 270 people. The Scots I know would remove his cancerous prostate and boil it up in some haggis. His head (removed prior to haggis feast) would adorn the end of a sharp stick and be paraded around the towns and villages to warn others of what they might expect should they attempt anything as barbarous.

The Scot that released this scum is named Kenny MacAskill. He’s the Cabinet Secretary for Justice in Scotland. I’m certain he would have no use for a kilt stool.

A work associate (Scott you know who you are.) and I have been having musical discussions recently. This young man missed being exposed to early rock and roll. Now, he’s making up for lost time. I have always noticed that the guitar cords (about 45 seconds in) in Someday We’ll Be Together sound so similar to those that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) plays at the “big dance” in Back to the Future. You know. Earth Angel. Where Marty begins to see his family fade from a photo. He even sees himself begin to fade until his parents finally kiss on the dance floor.

Forced Charity

I think when I’m out in the garden. And I think I like to help others that aren’t able to help themselves. I think I would like someone to be able to help me whenever I can’t help myself. I think it’s good when we help each other. I think it’s bad when others force me to be charitable in the form of social services (a.k.a. taxes). I think most of those services are helpful. I think most of those services are abused. I think a lot more good could come from charity if those receiving were given the opportunity or shown how to better themselves so they could give rather than receive. I think I thought of this when I saw the aphids sucking the life out of my pumpkin leaves.

On the underside of the pumpkin leaf and on the stems are aphids, aphid eggs, and ladybug larvae.

I think I’m tired of getting the life sucked out of me by others. I think.

World Peace

There are many disturbing issues in the world that bother me – illegal immigration, government intrusion, world peace, irresponsible people / businesses with their hands out, people acting like Chicken Little shouting that the Earth is warming! These are things I have decided not to get my undies in a wad over. My mantra will be to concentrate on things that I can control.

I decided to try to grow the perfect tomato. I have grown the perfect tomato. Let the angels sing. I picked my perfect Ace tomato this morning. A cool, refreshing breeze kissed my cheek to confirm that this was the perfect tomato. A photograph was taken to mark this date in history. Imagine, the photo didn’t even need to be touched up at all. The above image is straight out of the camera.

Now, I will move on to conquer something else. Perhaps I will grow the perfect pumpkin later this summer. For now, I will be satisfied with my accomplishment and look to creating the perfect salsa.

It was 1991. It was hot. It was the 4th of July. It was fun. The speedway up at the end of the road had a fireworks display that night. We would spread blankets on the front lawn, pop popcorn and watch the sky light up with loads of OOOOOOs and AAAAAHHHHs! Once the show was over, we would make believe the sheet on top of us was our tent. Anyone passing on a bicycle was a cowboy. Anyone passing by walking was a Indian. Prowling cats were mountain lions. Stray dogs were coyotes. All the play guns from the toy chest were in the “tent” with us. Flashlights helped with our surprise attacks. Once the unsuspecting soul got close enough we let ‘em have it with all the imaginary ammunition imaginable. BLAM!

It’s 2009. The speedway had their fireworks display last weekend. I stood alone in the front yard and enjoyed the show. No popcorn. No cowboys. No kids. Just fun memories of 4th of Julys not so long ago.

August 1977

The recent death of Michael Jackson sent my mind back to August 16, 1977 - the day Elvis died. My 17 year old cousin from England was visiting for the summer. She missed the bicentennial celebration a year earlier; but she enjoyed the 4th of July in the "colonies". We had both just earned our drivers' licenses and had loads of summertime fun. The only car I had to drive was a 1962 Plymouth Valiant.

It was a two door with a push button transmission. I was completely embarrassed to drive it; but it got us around and the radio worked. Our fun was innocent and very inexpensive. In that year, the price of gas jumped to about $0.75 a gallon. We could turn in soda bottles or aluminum cans for cash to buy the gas (...and we griped that gas was too high!). If we wanted to enjoy a swim, we would pool hop. That's where we would enjoy a swimming pool at a local hotel. If we got caught, we went to another hotel. With her accent, we never got busted.

Her departure date was August 16. I can't remember the reason her flight was delayed; but she was thrilled to have been in America the same day that Elvis died.

Goatheads - Dang It!

I've been riding my bike each evening after dinner. Pedalling along the sidewalk that is flanked by unkempt landscaping helps me to burn the calories and help my bad back. Either the developer is a slug (and he is) or the county can't afford the maintenance (they can't) - but I have to get off my bike occasionally and push the goathead weeds off the sidewalk and back to the dirt where they started. This practice will, no doubt, have to continue until the (ir)responsible party takes responsibility.

When I was a kid, we would intentionally step on these so they would stick in our Keds so we could have tap shoes. It wasn't fun to land on these with flip flops or barefeet. It's no fun today to have these boogers jammed into my bike tires.

Doctor, Doctor Give Me The News...

I prefer to see doctors in the big city (L.A.) when I have the luxury of scheduling appointments. Doctors in my town are fine; but typically the very best practice in the big city. A cousin was directed to have a mastectomy while the L.A. doctor prescribed a lumpectomy. The drive is a drag; but the proper diagnosis is worth it.

My health insurance is a wonderful benefit that I have earned that enables me to go where I want, when I want. If government gets hold of health care, can I expect the same service I receive at the DMV? IRS? Social Security? Post Office? If yes is the answer, I wonder if I could request Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard. At the very least, I could be entertained.

Addicted to Painting

Many house fraus would love to have someone around to make sure everything is freshly painted. I test drove cars this weekend. VW, Honda, and a SMART car. SMART car? Not so smart car. It was an automatic that shifted like a teenager learning to drive a stick. Holy crap. What a rough ride. If this is the type of vehicle to look forward to with the federal government taking over car companies, I'm looking into getting a horse. Smokes!

This may be very European...clearly, I'm not. Next stop---Ford.

KaPow! We scooted on out of there when we heard several loud explosions. It could have been harmless target practice. It could have been a coyote shoot. It could have been a cannon blowing up during a Civil War reenactment. We were not sticking around to find out. Maybe the cowboys were holding court for the gangstas.

We moved on up the road and pulled off on Blue Mountain Road to stretch our legs (6 legs needed to be stretched.).

The elevation was increasing as we moved into the Sierra Nevada foothills from the Kern River Oilfield. I turned the radio to a classic country station and belted out tunes with Willie, David Allen Coe, Charlie Rich, and many others.
We came across an historic landmark or two. Here's the 1st one that looks to be used for rifle practice. I don't know what the landmarks look like anywhere else; but in Kern County I notice that a stone monument is erected with a brass plaque affixed. Sadly, some plaques have been vandalized or even removed. Punks!

Woody! Not THAT Woody---Woody, California. My pooch and I took a quick road trip on Saturday. He's excited to just go for a ride; so we loaded up and hit the road.

Heading northeast on the Glennville-Woody Road, we wound our way through the Kern River Oilfield. I decided to just point and shoot the camera as I was driving. Whenever I thought I could capture the moment, I snapped. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn't. You decide. Please excuse the bugs.

I joined my friend, Leonard, at a ranch rodeo this morning. It's a fantastic place to see beautiful horses and wonderfully, practical horsemanship. It's also a great place to people watch.

The faces are hidden to protect the guilty.

Some shunned the paparazzi, while one cowboy didn't have a clue that a camera was pointed in his direction OR he could not care less. I was almost disgusted thinking that Uncle Pecos had a cell phone in his hand.

It was a horseshoe.

There was a lizard riding the warm breeze by latching onto the grandstand shade.

"Cowabunga, Dude" takes on a new meaning.

Butt, most important of all, there were many Wranglers to admire. It was a perfect Sunday. Amen.

I made an observation years ago; and now the situation seems to be getting worse. Youngsters (20 somethings and younger) brush off history. If they don't know about a particular bit of history, the phrase That happened before my time is used to sweep away any relevance of anything that occurred prior to their birth on this planet. Rather than make a notation of interest and learn of an historical event, I am met with that response. My rebuttal is Most everything happened before your time.

Tea Party

On April 15, there will be protests called tea parties held all over the country. The protests are a result of the huge spending bill with an attempt to tap the revolutionary spirit of the Boston Tea Party. I don't think this will do anything more than boost the ratings of talk radio among those that already listen. It's a grand, organized (kind of) effort to make a point that really won't do anything at all except raise awareness. Maybe that's good enough.

My hope is that this awareness will encourage everyone to vote. If you enjoy government growing even larger, you can take another bite of that mushroom and vote to keep the current politicians employed. If you would prefer that government shrink (hahahahaha), you can take another bite of that same mushroom and vote to fire the current politicians.

If I attend any of these parties it will be to take photos. I don't plan on attending; but I am interested to learn what affect the tea parties will have other than publicity. Maybe people on both sides of the mushroom will start to think a bit more on there own and shed their sheep skins.

If I can choose, I would like to come back as a cat next time. You sleep about 23 hours out of the day. My cats have set the standard quite high. When they finally wake up, their day is spent killing birds, gophers, and other rodents.

But right now they have a very important pastime of watching for the mailman and his delivery of their new Furminator.

Of course, being the cutest baby one is THE most important job. Ever.

Walking

On Saturday, my mother complained that her knee was bothering her and that she didn't want to go to lunch or shop at the local nursery. Fine. Lunch was good and I bought some Peppermint Daddy pansies.

On Sunday, her knee still bothered her. I asked if she would like to go with me and the poopy dog to the park then come over for dinner. She could walk as much or as little as she liked. The dog would have fun riding in the car. He would have fun digging for gophers. I would take pictures. Okay. She would do it. I picked her up. She put on my dad's old coat to keep her warm on this cool spring day. She brought his cane to help her with her walking. We were off to the park.

The hills were green. The trees were budding. I ushered her toward the bike path so she would walk on smooth, solid ground. And she's off! Dang. Her pace picked up and we were truckin'. Kids were rollerskating and bicycling. She could hang. If this is how she exercises with a bum knee, I think the Olympics are in her future when she heals.

She may not like her picture here; but I'll take my chances since she still doesn't even know how to turn on my dad's computer.

The Hills Are Alive...

This afternoon, I went for a walk in the hills with the Dude and the dog. Note: I pronounce "hill" as if I'm from Texas (heel). I'm not. The rain yesterday cleared the skies and sweetened the grass. The hills in the foreground are used by cross country runners training to win, Bureau of Land Management firemen training to put out forest fires (The Sierra Nevadas are in the distance.), mountain bike enthusiasts, and middle aged fulump-a-dumps walking their dog.

We parked at the base of the hills along with all the others. As soon as I opened the door of the Element, the poopy dog rolled out to get started. He was enthusiastic. He was so enthusiastic that he had to leave evidence that he is the most efficient food processor around. Pee You! At the base was a BLM fireman suited up for training. He had a backpack loaded with weights along with a shovel. We started about the same time except we took different paths. He's the tiny little yellow dot on the image below. He's also the even tinier little yellow dot on the image above. Click on either photo for a bigger view.

Soon this grass will be golden brown and the BLM guy will be sweating bullets with the heat from the sun and heat from the fire. The skies will be full of smoke and hazy and this view will be a dream. I'll try to return and take a picture of one of those ugly days. Until then, I'm loving the weather.
